After a great result at the 2008 World Super-bike support class Chas Hern was looking forward to competing in the Moto GP support class but the team’s budget for the year had almost reached its limit and Chas looked like being a spectator for the event.
Chas was contacted by sponsor Marty from Underground Design in South Australia with a plan to see him line up on the Super-bike grid. Rod Churchwood from RC Motorsport also came aboard and Chas was on his way.

Chas Hern selected for 2009 Kirk McCarthy scholarship |
|
After what can only be described as the worst round of the year for the Chas Hern/RC motorsport team, a major boost came at the awards dinner.
Chas had finished 2nd in the 2008 formula Xtreme Championship and collected his trophy, but to his surprise it wasn’t going to be his only trip to the stage. Chas suffered a damaged ankle in the 2nd race for the weekend but insisted on showing up to the dinner to thank sponsors and his team.
After the intermission, Chas’s name was called out to accept the Kirk McCarthy award and he hopped his way down to the stage to gladly collect the trophy. “This means a lot to me. I had the privilege of racing against Kirk in dirt track. I have also had the honor of meeting his parents Margaret and Allan, as they live only 20 minutes from the Motorcycle/Lawn mower shop where I used to work. They used to come in and buy parts from me.” commented Chas proudly accepting the award. This is a major boost to the team as they will be stepping up to a premier class in 2009. Chas will again be riding Suzuki’s and details of the team will be revealed soon.
Big thanks to everyone behind the Kirk McCarthy fund and especially Allan and Margaret McCarthy for their ongoing support for up and coming Australian riders after the loss of Kirk, one of Australia’s greatest motorcycle personality’s and competitors.

3 weeks after my high speed Eastern creak crash I finally have had the operation that should see me take part on the Mallala grid. With no healing being shown after 2 weeks I have had a screw put in my Scafoid to assist the bone to heal, with a clean break and a 2mm gap the options were 6 weeks in plaster [missing Mallala] or screw the bone back together and hope my strength is enough to gain some points at Rd 2 Mallala. My left arm is all ready loosing mussel and it's killing me to not be able to train. But the doctors have said they will cut the plaster off for Mallala so I am looking forward to getting back on my Mick Hone/Hern Engineering Suzuki for Rd2 and trying to get some points before my home race at Winton Rd3.
The team will be at Phillip Island this weekend But I will be swapping roles with Gen, as she will be taking part on the 400 grid at the first Rd of the Victorian interclub series.
in the photo my Scafoid is being drilled before the screw is fitted.
